Battery Innovation Patents and Research Activity

Patent data provides a measurable view of inventive activity, but it is not a direct measure of commercial success, performance or revenue. The IEA/EPO international-patent-family method represents inventions with applications in at least two countries.

  • The IEA/EPO dataset recorded more than 65,000 international patent families in electricity storage filed worldwide since 2000, with the dataset running through 2018.
  • Battery and other electricity-storage patenting grew at an average 14% annually worldwide from 2005 to 2018.
  • That 14% rate was four times the average growth rate across all technology fields over the same period under the IEA/EPO methodology.
  • Energy storage represented 40% of global energy patenting in 2023, based on international patent families.
  • Japan’s share of cathode-material patents fell from 50% in 2010 to below 10% in 2022, while China’s share rose from 4% to almost 40%.
  • Battery-circularity patenting grew by an average 42% per year worldwide from 2017 to 2023, covering collection, sorting, mechanical processing and recovery technologies.

Patent-share changes should not be read as production shares or evidence of product quality. They indicate where inventive activity was recorded under the relevant international filing definitions.

Demand figures from the IEA are generally capacity-weighted installed demand: volume-weighted average battery size multiplied by vehicle sales. They describe batteries installed in vehicles and storage applications, not factory output, and exclude stockpiling.

  • Global energy-sector battery demand reached about 1 TWh in 2024.
  • EV battery demand exceeded 950 GWh worldwide in 2024, rising 25% from 2023 to 2024.
  • Electric cars accounted for more than 85% of global EV battery demand in 2024, while electric-truck battery demand grew more than 75% and approached 3% of the global total.
  • Global battery-cell manufacturing capacity grew almost 30% in 2024 to more than 3 TWh. That capacity was about three times EV and battery-storage demand, a capacity-to-demand comparison that does not imply full utilization.
  • China held about 85% of global battery-cell manufacturing capacity in 2024, and Chinese producers owned more than 75% of global capacity.
Measure Observed period Result Scope
EV battery demand 2024 More than 950 GWh Worldwide installed demand
Cell-manufacturing capacity 2024 More than 3 TWh Worldwide capability
Capacity relative to EV and storage demand 2024 About 3 times Worldwide derived comparison
EV battery demand projection 2030 More than 3 TWh IEA STEPS scenario

In the IEA STEPS scenario, global EV battery demand exceeds 3 TWh in 2030, up from about 1 TWh in 2024. Electric trucks rise to more than 8% of EV battery demand in 2030, compared with nearly 3% in 2024; both figures are scenario results rather than guaranteed outcomes.

Battery Costs, Energy Density and Performance Data

Cost and performance innovation can be tracked through prices per kilowatt-hour, pack-level energy density and reported charging capability. Pack-level energy density is not the same as cell-level specific energy, and rounded price definitions can differ by cell or pack scope.

  • Lithium-ion battery prices fell from about $1,400/kWh in 2010 to below $140/kWh in 2023, a reduction of more than 90% based on the rounded endpoints.
  • Prices fell about 30% between 2020 and 2024, with the IEA attributing the change to scale, cell and pack manufacturing, and design innovation.
  • Battery-pack energy density rose more than 50% for NMC batteries and about 65% for LFP batteries between 2020 and 2024.
  • Batteries released by BYD and CATL in early 2025 were reported to add 400–500 km of driving range in five minutes of charging. These are company and product claims, not fleet-average results.
  • A 50 GWh gigafactory is estimated to produce up to 10 million cylindrical EV cells per day or hundreds of thousands of prismatic EV cells per day, depending on cell format and operating assumptions.

Deployment provides additional scale indicators. Battery storage capacity additions totaled 42 GW globally in 2023, while more than 85 GW of battery storage was in use in the global power sector; power capacity in GW does not specify storage duration or energy capacity in GWh.

Nearly 45 million EVs were on the road worldwide in 2023, including electric cars, buses and trucks. These are stock measures, not annual sales.

Battery Chemistry Innovation and Adoption Statistics

Chemistry shares differ by application. LFP adoption in EVs should not be compared directly with LFP’s share of stationary storage, and the IEA’s EV demand measure is based on installed capacity rather than unit counts.

Chemistry or market Period Share or result Geography
LFP in EV sales 2023 40% Worldwide
LFP in new storage deployments 2023 80% Worldwide
LFP in global EV battery market 2024 Nearly half Worldwide
LFP in domestic battery demand 2024 Nearly three-quarters China
LFP batteries sold Nov.–Dec. 2024 80% China

In 2023, more than half of new EV batteries used relatively high-nickel chemistries, while LFP reached 40% of EV sales. LFP also made up 80% of new battery-storage deployments, showing how application requirements shape chemistry adoption.

  • In 2024, LFP represented nearly half of the global EV battery market and met nearly three-quarters of China’s domestic battery demand.
  • LFP reached 80% of batteries sold in China in November and December 2024, a two-month snapshot rather than a full-year share.
  • LFP’s EU EV share exceeded 10% in 2024 after growing about 90% for the second consecutive year.
  • LFP’s US EV share remained below 10% in 2024, with the source reporting a slight contraction.
  • LFP exceeded 50% of electric-car battery share in Southeast Asia, Brazil and India in 2024; this is a grouped regional and country result without one common exact percentage.
  • More than 50 GWh of US battery-manufacturing capacity was reallocated toward LFP production in 2025, which is not equivalent to completed output.

Battery Supply Chains, Investment and Geography

Innovation is also changing where batteries are demanded, manufactured and financed. Geography measures refer to different concepts: demand is assigned to batteries installed in vehicles sold in a region, while capacity refers to manufacturing capability or ownership.

  • China represented 60% of global EV battery demand in 2024.
  • Global battery investment totaled $150 billion in 2023; EV-battery investment was eight times its 2018 level, and storage investment was five times its 2018 level.
  • In the IEA STEPS scenario, China’s share of global battery demand declines from 60% in 2024 to just under 50% in 2030, while the US share falls from about 13% to below 10%.
  • Non-China emerging and developing economies are projected to double their EV battery-demand share from nearly 5% in 2024 to 10% in 2030 in STEPS.
  • Announced manufacturing plans imply China’s share could fall from 85% of global capacity in 2024 to about two-thirds in 2030, subject to cancellations and delays.

Chemistry innovation, enhanced recycling and battery right-sizing could cut critical-mineral demand by about 25% by 2030 in the IEA’s NZE analysis. That is a combined modeled potential, not an observed reduction.

USGS estimated 2024 world natural-graphite mine production at 1.6 million metric tons, with reserves of 290 million metric tons. China accounted for about 1.27 million metric tons, or 79% of the reported total in the USGS table; natural graphite also serves non-battery applications.

Battery Circularity and End-of-Life Data

Circularity innovation covers collection, sorting, mechanical processing and material recovery, while end-of-life forecasts depend on vehicle sales, battery life and retirement assumptions. Forecasts below are not observed outcomes.

  • About 1.2 million EV batteries could reach end of life worldwide in 2030.
  • About 14 million EV batteries could reach end of life worldwide in 2040, a longer-term projection with substantial uncertainty.
  • More than one in four cars sold globally was electric in 2025, a car-sales measure broader than battery sales and subject to the source’s EV definition.
  • Energy-sector uses accounted for over 90% of annual lithium-ion battery demand in 2023, up from 50% in 2016; energy-sector demand includes EVs and stationary storage.
  • The total lithium-ion battery market in 2016 was one-tenth its 2023 size in the IEA’s rounded comparison.

The IEA also estimates that a low-battery pathway could put nearly 500 GW of solar PV needed for a threefold renewable-capacity expansion at risk by 2030. This is a scenario result, not a realized loss.
